Trail Finder

There are hundreds of long-distance trails out there, and picking the right one is harder than it should be. This tool matches trails to what you actually have: your experience level, the number of days you can get away, the season you can travel, and the kind of country you want to walk through.

It covers 79 trails, including all 11 National Scenic Trails, plus lesser-known routes and a solid international selection. Day estimates are calculated from your experience level against the trail’s navigation difficulty, so a beginner and a seasoned hiker get different answers for the same trail. Trails you cannot realistically hike in the season you picked are filtered out entirely rather than buried at the bottom.

How the matching works

Days available is the strongest signal. Rather than using a fixed day range for each trail, the tool estimates how long you would take: base miles per day from your experience level, adjusted for how much of the route is well-signed versus route-finding or off-trail. That estimate is then held inside the trail’s real-world range, because published itineraries already account for elevation gain, hut stages, altitude and resupply that raw mileage cannot see. If a trail needs far more time than you have, it drops out. If you have partial time, it shows up flagged as a section hike.

Season is a hard filter. If a trail is not realistically hikeable in any month you selected, it will not appear. The John Muir Trail does not show up for a January trip, and the hot desert routes do not show up for July.

Experience, region, terrain, remoteness, permits and FarOut coverage all shift the ranking rather than excluding trails outright, so you can see near-misses and decide for yourself.

Every result links through to a trail page with route details and authoritative outside resources. Browse the full set on the Trails page.

Trail data is compiled from trail organizations, land managers and hiker reports. Distances and seasons shift, and permits change year to year. Always confirm current conditions with the managing agency before you commit to a trip.
